Indonesian Press Council Proposes Draft Regulation on Media Sustainability in Effort to Support High-Quality Journalism

During National Press Day 2023, which fell on 9 February, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, highlighted the dire condition of the country’s digital media landscape, which is filled with a wealth of algorithmically based digital media operations that do not align themselves with authentic, high-quality journalism and journalistic standards.[1] The president’s statement was reaffirmed by the Director-General of Public Information and Communication at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Usman Kansong, who claimed that Indonesia’s journalistic standards have been decreasing of late due to the emergence of an unhealthy media ecosystem and also a lack of verification being carried out by platforms carrying so-called clickbait journalism.[2]
