Govt. Identifies Customary Land for Recognition of Indigenous Peoples

The Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency ("Minister"), Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), has confirmed that he will continue to inventory and record the entirety of Indonesia’s customary land. In addition, the Minister has stated that the acknowledgment of indigenous peoples is essential to any proper discussions of justice, welfare, politics, law and society.
The Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency is committed to accelerating the registration of 3.2 million hectares of customary land belonging to around 3,000 indigenous peoples, including in areas of West Sumatra, Central Kalimantan, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, West Papua, Papua, North Sumatra, Central Sulawesi, Aceh, the Riau Islands, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan. This issue is specifically addressed under Regulation of the Minister No. 14 of 2024 on the Implementation of Land Administration and the Registration of the Land Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto, has coordinated various parties under a single forum THAT will address the equalization of Regulations in order to resolve issues relating to customary land. In the meantime, steps are needed to accelerate the registration of customary land, including the coordination and synchronization of cross-ministerial Regulations. The government will then engage in socialization efforts with customary law communities and will issue various cross-ministerial Regulations. The government will also update and synchronize relevant data and recognition statuses of indigenous peoples while coordinating determinations under the pilot locations project. _(ANT)
