Minister of Industry Encourages Expansion of Specific Natural Gas Prices Program to Improve National Industrial Competitiveness

  • Indonesia’s Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has affirmed that the expansion of the Specific Natural Gas Prices (Harga Gas dan Bumi Tertentu – "HGBT") program across all industrial sectors is one of the measures that is set to be introduced in an effort to boost national industrial competitiveness in the face of increasing global market pressures.
  • The HGBT program is currently being applied across the following seven industrial sectors: 1) Fertilizers; 2) Petrochemicals; 3) Oleochemicals; 4) Steel; 5) Ceramics; 6) Glass; and 7) Rubber gloves. The HGBT program is currently offering these sectors cheap gas at prices of under US$ 6 per Million British Thermal Units (MMBTU).
  • The HGBT program is set to end this year, however, the Ministry of Industry is pushing for its extension. In addition, Mr. Kartasasmita has stated that all stakeholders are responsible for the effective implementation of this policy and for ensuring that ministries and institutions realize the importance of the HGBT program for economic growth and to produce a high multiplier effect.
