The Draft KIA Bill and Maternity Leave: Ensuring the Rights of Women and Children vs. Discrimination in the Workplace

Overview

It is generally recognized that many women who have become mothers are not only taking on the role of mother and housewife but also play a part in the workplace in an effort to earn income for themselves and their families. However, women who work still have to fulfill their role as mothers as this is critical and essential in terms of the ongoing growth and development of their children. Furthermore, their role as mothers is especially important during the so-called “golden age” of their children. The golden age of children covers the first 1000 days after conception and breaks down into 270 days during pregnancy and 730 days after birth. During this period, the overall growth of a child (i.e. brain, body, metabolism and immune system) moves at an accelerated pace. It is therefore vital that this 1000-day period is optimized in order to avoid children being subject to any unnecessary risk, including the risk of an underdeveloped IQ or potential malnutrition. For this reason, the role of the mothers during childhood’s golden age is essential to ensuring that this important period is properly optimized.[1]
