Govt. Introduces New Regulation on the Placement and Protection of Migrant Vessel Crews

In response to a lawsuit brought by former migrant vessel crewmembers against President Joko Widodo through the State Administrative Court demanding the swift establishment of a legal framework for the protection of migrant vessel crewmembers,[1] the government has finally issued Regulation No. 22 of 2022 on the Placement and Protection of the Migrant Trading and Fishing Vessel Crews (“Regulation 22/2022”).  

In essence, Regulation 22/2022 establishes a set of guidelines for the proper placement of Indonesian Migrant crewmembers with merchant vessels and fishing vessels (collectively referred to as “Vessel Crews”), as well as details of the various protections that can be granted to said Vessel Crews.
