Supreme Court Acknowledges Multi-Bar Practice

Following uncertainty over which bar association may request that the court of appeal (Pengadilan Tinggi) take oaths from its lawyers, the Chief Justice of Supreme Court (”Chief Justice”) has issued Letter No. 73/KMA/HK.01/IX/2015 on Advocate Oaths (“2015 Letter”).

In a bid to end the current confusion that exists among Indonesian lawyers, the Chief Justice has ordered all courts of appeal across Indonesia to take oaths from lawyers belonging to any bar association. In other words, the Supreme Court has finally acknowledged multiple bar associations and therefore now allows lawyers from all bar associations to practice law within Indonesia.
