Overview
For the past few months, forest and land fires (Kebakaran Hutan dan Lahan – “Karhutla”) have occurred across several regions in Indonesia, including Kalimantan, with the situation intensifying during August 2026.[1] The fires have generated haze affecting residential areas and, in certain cases, spreading across national borders to neighboring countries.[2] The heightened Karhutla risk has coincided with the dry season and a very strong El Niño, which has contributed to lower rainfall and increasingly dry conditions across large parts of Indonesia.[3]
