Overview
Environmental Protection and Management (Perlindungan dan Pengelolaan Lingkungan Hidup – “PPLH”) has a crucial role to play in maintaining a proper balance between development and environmental sustainability, as well as preventing pollution and degradation. In Indonesia, the concept of PPLH is specifically addressed under the framework of Law No. 32 of 2009 on PPLH, which has been amended several times, most recently by Regulation of the Government in Lieu No. 2 of 2022 on Job Creation (collectively referred to as “Law 32/2009”). Without a well-planned and integrated PPLH framework, development activities risk causing environmental degradation and problems, including pollution, deforestation, water crises and other disasters that may ultimately result in long-term harm being sustained by the economy and society as a whole.
