Government Plans New Strategies to Stabilize Live Cattle Prices

  • The Director-General of Livestock and Veterinary Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, Agung Suganda (“Director-General”), has affirmed that the government is currently preparing a number of strategic plans and initiatives aimed at ensuring the stability of live cattle prices across the country. This strategy is currently undergoing a process of internal evaluation that is being implemented by the government. Meanwhile, the Director-General has affirmed that business actors will be subject to the imposition of sanctions if they are discovered setting the prices of live cattle below the Rp. 48,000 - Rp. 50,000 per kilogram threshold.
  • Furthermore, the Director-General has stated that the government is set to prioritize the drafting of policies aimed at offering support to local farmers, including a policy that will control selective beef imports. This policy is expected to foster a healthy business climate within the agricultural sector, while the Director-General has stated that the government is currently working with several farmers' associations in order to gather input regarding this policy.
  • The above-outlined initiatives were previously confirmed by the Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman (“Minister”), who affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that prices of live cattle at the level of farmers do not fall below the Rp. 48,000 - Rp. 50,000 per kilogram price range. In this regard, the Minister has instructed the Director-General not to issue any recommendations for imports of beef with sales prices that fall below this threshold. (ANT)
