- Indonesia’s Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, has stated that land intensification and extensification are key strategies in terms of efforts to accelerate the achievement of food self-sufficiency.
- Sulaiman explained that these strategies involve two main programs. Firstly, intensification aims to increase the cropping index (IP) or the number of planting and harvesting cycles on the same land within the space of a year. This program will involve two initiatives, specifically the use of water pumps (Pompanisation) and land optimization. Through this intensification program, the cropping index (IP), which previously allowed only one planting cycle per year, is targeting an increase of up to three cycles. Secondly, the extensification program is focusing on expanding the total number of rice fields, with the government targeting the opening of 1 million hectares of new farmland within a year.
- In addition, Sam Herodian, a Special Member of Staff at the Minister of Agriculture for Agricultural Policy, has confirmed that the 3 Million Hectare Rice Field Program will get underway in 2025. Herodian has emphasized that this program represents a significant step toward strengthening Indonesia’s food security and will be implemented in stages, from land clearing, planting and fertilization to harvesting.
