  • Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto ("Coordinating Minister"), has urged completion of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ("ASEAN") Digital Economy Framework Agreement ("DEFA"), which is set to be further expedited in the interests of greater regional economic integration. According to the Coordinating Minister, the goal is to complete 50% of negotiation settlements by the end of 2024. At the time of writing, only 14% of the negotiations had already been completed.
  • The Coordinating Minister is continuing to highlight two-stage initiatives that could be implemented in order to further expedite DEFA negotiations, as follows: 1) The implementation of the code of conduct, as originally agreed back in 2023; and 2) The implementation of new innovative approaches during the negotiation process. The aforementioned two-stage initiatives are seen as a solution to expediting the launch of DEFA in 2025.
  • Every ASEAN member state has been granted the flexibility and incentives to actively participate in the aforementioned DEFA negotiations. (ANT)
