- The National Food Agency has issued Regulation No. 10 of 2024 on the Maximum Contaminant Limits for Fresh Food in Circulation ("Regulation 10/2024"), which has been in force since 25 August 2024.
- In essence, Regulation 10/2024sets the maximum allowable levels of contaminants for fresh food products that are distributed within Indonesia. This Regulation aims to safeguard public health by ensuring that circulated fresh food products meet stringent safety standards.
- The Appendices to the Regulation specify the maximum permitted levels of various heavy metal contaminants, including arsenic, cadmium and lead, for various categories of fresh food, including cereals, vegetables, fruits, nuts and spices. The Appendices to the Regulation also set limits on microbial contaminants, including Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes and Bacillus cereus, and mycotoxins such as aflatoxins and fumonisins.
- Compliance with these standards is mandatory for all individuals and entities involved in the distribution of fresh food products within Indonesia. Moreover, the new regulation mandates regular laboratory testing in order to verify that contaminant levels do not exceed the established thresholds. Said testing must be conducted in accredited laboratories, either in Indonesia or in the relevant countries of origin if fresh foods are being imported.
