- During the recent High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholders Partnership 2024, the Deputy for Political Legal and Security Affairs at the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency ("Ministry") expressed Indonesia’s intention to pursue the so-called blue economy concept due to its high potential as a maritime country with abundant resources that are capable of enhancing the overall prosperity of its people.
- The blue economy concept has been developed by the Ministry through the Indonesian Blue Economy Roadmap 2023 - 2045. During its development, Indonesia’s realization of the blue economy concept has also become a reference for a number of ASEAN countries and has been acknowledged by the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
- In addition to enhancing prosperity across the population, the blue economy concept also has the potential to become a new catalyst for national economic development within Indonesia. The overall implementation of the blue economy will encompass mobilization and activities across a range of industries, particularly those that relate to the maritime sector. At present, Indonesia is committed to increasing its maritime economy contribution from 7.6% to 15% in the period up to 2045 and achieving a 10% marine protected area figure by 2030.
