Retail Sector as an Economic Indicator: Insights from the Indonesia Retail Summit 2024

  • Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto ("Minister") highlighted the significance of the retail sector as a key indicator of national economic growth during the opening of the Indonesia Retail Summit 2024. Citing a World Bank report, Mr. Hartarto noted that Indonesia’s retail and consumption sector has shown continuous growth since 2022. Mr. Hartarto emphasized that the presence and number of retail outlets, including Alfamart, Indomaret and Ace Hardware, serve as indicators of national economic health and reflect overall consumer purchasing power.
  • Mr. Hartarto also pointed out that Jakarta’s retail sector is particularly strong, with the city having surpassed the middle-income trap, as evidenced by a per capita income that has reached US$ 20,000 (approximately Rp. 300 million) annually. This income level has fueled the development of numerous modern shopping centers in the capital.
  • The Minister also discussed the government's commitment to maintaining the purchasing power of the middle class through various support programs, including contributions to BPJS Healthcare, the pre-employment card initiative and energy subsidies. Mr. Hartarto noted that these programs are designed to ensure that the middle class has the necessary savings and purchasing power for expenditures beyond basic food and beverages, reflecting their role in the broader economy.
