- In order to promote greater efforts to conserve Indonesia’s natural resources, Commission IV at the House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat – "DPR") and several government Ministries have agreed to bring the Draft Bill on the Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems ("Draft Bill") before a DPR plenary meeting that will pass it into law. The Draft Bill will then become the main reference in relation to natural resource management and conservation within Indonesia.
- The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar, has stated that the existing framework of Law No. 5 of 1990 on the Conservation of Living Natural Resources and Their Ecosystems ("Law 5/1990") needs to be updated and brought into line with current practice out in the field given that it was first passed into law more than 30 years.
- Furthermore, the initiative to amend the Law 5/1990 has been described as an effective step toward safeguarding the country’s potential in this area and ensuring the sustainable utilization of natural resources, while providing access to community welfare. At the same time, the new framework also represents an effort to improve welfare overall and optimize the use of biological resources and community involvement through a deeper understanding of ecosystem characteristics and survival.
