- The Chief-Executive for the Supervision of Financial Sector Business Actors, Education and Consumer Protection at the Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan – "OJK"), Friderica Widyasari Dewi ("Chief Executive"), has issued a statement affirming that the OJK will be focusing its energies on a new educational initiative aimed at the general public and designed to address the various risks and dangers associated with online gambling (Judi Online – "Judol"). This affirmation has been issued in response to a comment made by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy, who recently claimed that victims of gambling could be entitled to receive social aid (Bantuan Sosial – "Bansos") from the government.
- According to the Chief Executive, the provision of the above-mentioned Bansos can be viewed from two different perspectives. On the one hand, offering Bansos to victims of Judol may serve as a means of government aid. However, on the other hand, said Bansos may result in a certain degree of dependency on such aid developing among the perpetrators or victims of Judol.
- It should also be noted that on 14 June 2024, President Joko Widodo issued Decree No. 21 of 2024 (“Decree 21/2024”) on the Task Force for the Eradication of Online Gambling (“Task Force”). As this title suggests, Decree 21/2024 sets out the various duties and authorities of the Task Force as regards efforts to eradicate Judol cases. The recent statement from the Chief Executive was issued in response to the president’s plea to the Indonesian public to refrain from participating in Judol, as well as the fact that the government has already shutdown 2.1 million Judol websites as of June 2024.
