- A total of 51 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Centers have now been established across Indonesia at both public and private universities, Vivi Yulaswati, Deputy for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources at the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (Badan Perencanaan Nasional – "Bappenas") has announced. The establishment of Indonesia’s SDG Center Network is set to strengthen collaborations and the role of SDG Centers throughout Indonesia through exchanges of knowledge, experience, innovation and other interactions which are expected to help Indonesia accelerate progress towards its SDG targets.
- Vivi has affirmed that the accelerated introduction of the SDGs requires extraordinarily complex coordination efforts, with an active role being played by all collaboration platforms. Academics and universities, in particular, have become involved in line with one of the main focuses of SDGs themselves i.e. the assessment and ranking of universities at the global level (e.g. Times Higher Education Impact Ranking and GreenMetric). The hope is that this strategy will improve the country’s image and reputation in this area, while also having a positive impact in terms of Indonesia’s ability to achieve its sustainable development goals.
- Furthermore, since May 2024, Bappenas has been organizing a communication forum that brings together administrators, including SDG Center leaders from various universities in Indonesia, in order to discuss efforts to strengthen the inter-SDGs Center network through the Indonesia SDGs Center Network.
