Govt. Stipulates Seven Electronic Appliances Now Subject to Mandatory SKEM and LTHE Standards

  • Anggraeni Ratri, the Sub-Coordinator for the Implementation of Energy Efficiency Technology at the Directorate of Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources ("Ministry"), ("Sub-Coordinator"), has affirmed that seven electronic appliances will now be subject to the mandatory application of the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (Standar Kinerja Energi Minimum – "SKEM") and Energy Saving Mark Label (Label Tanda Hemat Energi – "LTHE"). According to the Sub-Coordinator, these seven electronic appliances break down as follows: 1) Air conditioners; 2) Rice cookers; 3) Fans; 4) Refrigerators; 5) Light emitting diodes (LED) lamps; 6) Televisions; and 7) Showcase coolers.
  • The Sub-Coordinator has stated that the SKEM and LTHE policy is set to be further tightened by 2030 through an increase in the number of electronic appliances that will be subject to the mandatory SKEM and LTHE requirements to an expanded total of 11 electronic appliances. The new appliances that will be added to the existing list will include water dispensers, washing machines, irons and water pumps. The Sub-Coordinator has also stated that the SKEM and LTHE policy on electronic appliances will hopefully reduce electrical power usage by up to 599 MW, saving 3 TWh by 2025.
  • In a similar fashion, the Coordinator of Energy Conservation Supervision at the Direcorate-General of Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Endra Dedy Tamtama, has explained that through the application of an SKEM policy that aims to limit the maximum energy consumption of electronic appliances, manufacturers and importers of such appliances will be prohibited from distributing products that consume large amounts of energy. Meanwhile, LTHE labels should be affixed to all products and should indicate ratings of between one and five stars, which correspond to different energy efficiency ratings for electronic appliances.
