TikTok Affirms Commitment to Maintaining Fair Competition After Acquisition of Tokopedia

  • The Commission for the Supervision of Business Competition (Komisi Pengawas Persaingan Usaha - "KPPU") recently held a meeting with TikTok Pte. Ltd. ("TikTok"), a popular Chinese social media platform. This meeting came in the wake of the acquisition of Tokopedia by TikTok ("Transactions") on 30 - 31 January 2024. The KPPU was notified of both of these Transactions on 13 and 19 March 2024 and is now undertaking an initial assessment process.
  • According to the KPPU Deputy for Studies and Advocacy, Taufik Ariyanto, the meeting was held in order to gain some insight into TikTok's policies and practices regarding the promotion of fair business competition and support for Micro-, Small- and Medium-Scale Enterprises (Usaha Mikro, Kecil, dan Menengah – "UMKM") within Indonesia.
  • Taufik has stated that this meeting did not focus on the Transactions and their impacts, as the ongoing KPPU assessment process is addressing this area based on received notifications. Instead, the meeting aimed to promote an understanding of TikTok’s policies regarding the fostering of a healthy business competition environment and UMKM in the wake of the Transactions. During the hearing that was conducted by TikTok and the KPPU, the company set out its commitment to Indonesia, the prioritization of local products and the development of local UMKM. The meeting also aimed to set the record straight regarding various information rumors that have flourished among the general public.
  • Steve Reeder, TikTok’s Global Head of Antitrust, also affirmed TikTok’s commitment to supporting the sale of local products through the platform and to its efforts to prevent the sale of imported products that are not in accordance with Indonesian Government regulations.
  • Furthermore, TikTok underlined its commitment to the protection of consumer interests, support for UMKM and Indonesian products, detecting counterfeit goods and fully cooperating with all of Indonesia’s many regulatory frameworks.
