Gift-Giving During Religious Celebrations: Gratuities vs Tradition

Overview

The tradition of sending hampers on religious holidays, including the Islamic holiday of Eid Al-Fitr, has been around for a long time and has become even more popular across Indonesia in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In essence, this tradition aims to strengthen connections (silaturahmi) between parties, including between work colleagues.[1] As the Eid-Al Fitr holiday rapidly approaches, companies are busying themselves sending out hampers to employees, corporations, public agencies and others. However, a researcher from the Anti-Corruption Study Centre at Mulawarman University, Herdiansyah Hamzah, believes that hampers or parcels may be commonly given and interpreted as gratuities, which may qualify as a form of bribery.[2]
