Indonesia and UK Sign FLEGT Partnership Agreement

  • The Indonesian Government has issued Regulation of the President No. 40 of 2024 on the Ratification of the Voluntary Partnership Agreement Between the Republic of Indonesia and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade in Timber Products with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (collectively referred to as "Agreement"), which has been in force since 22 March 2024.
  • Through this Agreement, timber product shipments from Indonesia for import into the United Kingdom will only now be accepted if they are Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade ("FLEGT") licensed, meaning that products have been legally produced.
  • Indonesia is set to implement the Timber Legality Assurance System ("TLAS") in order to verify that timber products bound for shipments have been legally produced and also to ensure that only shipments that have been verified as such are ultimately exported to the United Kingdom. The FLEGT Licensing Scheme will apply to the various timber products that are listed under Annex IA to the Agreement, including: 1) Fuel timber; 2) Dark-red meranti, light-red meranti and meranti bakau; and 3) Plywood.
