Minister of Communication and Information Technology Preparing Dedicated AI Framework Amid Rapid Development and Increasing Use of AI Technologies

  • As Artificial Intelligence ("AI") technologies are now being utilized across various sectors of the economy by the general public, the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi ("Minister"), has stated that AI may have the potential to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of commercial activities through the automation of customer services. However, the Minister has also affirmed that it is important to anticipate this new form of technological disruption, as unanticipated developments in AI technology have the potential to result in destructive impacts.
  • In this regard, the Minister has expressed the hope that AI technology may be utilized optimally through the creation of telecommunications ecosystems that provide, design and establish Indonesian-based AI. Moreover, against a backdrop of the rapid development and uptake of AI technology, the Minister has affirmed that the government is working on a dedicated regulatory framework that will specifically address AI in order to anticipate the future utilization of these new technologies.
  • Furthermore, while the development of AI technology is believed by many to have huge promise and while the Minister has pointed out that the global market value of AI should reach an estimated US$ 13 trillion by 2030, various issues and challenges relating to the utilization of AI in Indonesia remain to be resolved. Said issues and challenges include AI integration and systems that are seen as challenging in nature, as well as a current lack of resources for, awareness of and knowledge of AI.
  • Given the above challenges, the Minister is urging telecommunications companies to support the application of AI technology by prioritizing three main aspects of AI ethics and utilization (i.e. solutions providers, systems integrators and end users). Moreover, said companies are also expected to invest in new management strategies by mapping the potential needs of companies that utilize AI technology, along with the relevant impacts that are likely to result from such utilization.
