Overview

Amid rapid development across a wide variety of financial service institutions that are operating within society, Rural Banks (Bank Perkreditan Rakyat – “BPR”) have a crucial role to play in serving the community, particularly its micro- and small-scale segments. Historically speaking, the existence of BPR has been aimed at the mobilization of public funds, as well as the eradication of illegal banks and loan sharks, which became widely reported phenomena during the Asian monetary crisis.[1] As such, it is understandable that the business activities of BPR revolve primarily around micro-, small- and medium-scale enterprises.
