MA Currently Developing AI-Based Decision Support System to Prevent Conflicting Court Decisions

  • The Head of Indonesia's Supreme Court Mahkamah Agung – "MA"), Chief Justice Prof. Muhammad Syarifuddin ("Chief Justice"), has affirmed that the MA is set to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a Decision Support System ("DSS") capable of providing information on any possible similarities that may exist between different cases. The hope is that the new DSS will be able to address any conflicting court decisions where rulings are handed down in similar cases. Said conflict mitigation is ultimately aimed at improving public satisfaction with court decisions and ensuring further legal certainty for Indonesia's general public.
  • The Chief Justice has stated that said DSS system is currently under development in five court chambers (i.e. general judiciary, religious courts, military, environment and state administration) throughout the DKI Jakarta area and nearby regions. Moreover, the Chief Justice expects that the DSS will ultimately be implemented at the national level by September 2024.
  • Given the close link between the DSS and the satisfaction of the general public with court decisions, the Chief Justice has affirmed that 95.43% of disputing parties are satisfied with first-level court decisions, while 44.96% and 87.78% of disputing parties are satisfied with appeal and cassation decisions respectively. In addition, the Chief Justice has also affirmed that the MA contributed Rp. 77,721,874,433 in Non-Tax State Revenue (Penerimaan Negara Bukan Pajak/PNBP) during 2023, which derived from imposed fines and compensation.
