Highlights of the 2024 General Election: Key Recommendations from Komnas HAM

  • As Indonesia gears up for its nationwide voting phase, the National Commission on Human Rights (Komisi Nasional Hak Asasi Manusia – "Komnas HAM") has issued nine specific election-day recommendations. The commission is encouraging all citizens to vote critically and rationally, respond wisely to election issues and actively monitor the election process, emphasizing a total rejection of bribery. The focus is being placed on professionalism and integrity among election organizers, with special attention on marginalized groups.
  • The call extends to organizers, particularly the General Election Commission (Komisi Pemilihan Umum/KPU) and election officials working at central polling stations (Tempat Pemungutan Suara/TPS), who are being urged to work with utmost integrity, impartiality and transparency in order to fulfill their responsibilities professionally. Stringent actions will be taken in relation to any violations of the Election Law and will be led by the Election Supervisory Board (Badan Pengawas Pemilu/Bawaslu), a body which is expected to uphold the integrity and quality of the 2024 General Election.
  • Komnas HAM has also emphasized the importance of preventing vote manipulation, upholding the principles of human rights and safeguarding freedom of speech. In this regard, Professor Muchamad Ali Safa’at, a Constitutional Law Professor at the University of Brawijaya, has stated that recent issues surrounding the amendment of Law No. 24 of 2003 on the Constitutional Court and the Constitutional Court Decision No. 90/PUU-XXI/2023, as well as the police response to the film “Dirty Vote, highlight the need to halt the abuses of power that are being perpetrated by those in authority.
