Government Set to Implement Nationwide Biomass Co-Firing Programs at 47 PLTU During 2024

  • The Interim Director-General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jisman P. Hutajulu ("Director-General"), recently affirmed that during 2023, biomass co-firing ("Co-firing") programs were implemented at 43 Steam Power Plants (Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Uap – "PLTU") located in the following areas: 1) Java; 2) Sumatra; 3) Kalimantan; 4) Sulawesi; 5) Nusa Tenggara; and 6) Papua.
  • It has been estimated that the above-described Co-firing programs have already reduced the country’s greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions by 1.05 million tons of CO2. Moreover, the Co-firing programs have utilized up to 991,000 tons of biomass and have resulted in the production of 1.04 TWh of green energy.
  • The Director-General has also affirmed that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is currently targeting the implementation of the Co-firing program at three additional PLTU during the course of 2024, resulting in an overall total of 47 implementing PLTU. (ANT)
