General Public and Healthcare Stakeholders Urged to Increase Awareness Amidst COVID-19 Spike

  • As with a number of countries around the globe, Indonesia is currently experiencing a spike in the number of Corona Virus Disease 2019 ("COVID-19") cases. In response, The Director-General of Disease Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Health ("Director-General") has decided to introduce various measures aimed at increasing awareness of the COVID-19 spike through the issuance of  Circular No. HK.02.02/C/4815/2023 of 2023 ("Circular 4815/2023"), which has been in force since 11 December 2023.
  • Circular 4815/2023 states that the recent spike in the number of COVID-19 cases is specifically linked to the EG.5 subvariant of the infamous omicron COVID-19 variant, which has been listed in the Variant of Interest (VOI) category. In this regard, Circular 4815/2023 mandates that several stakeholders should implement certain measures aimed at mitigation and prevention, including the following parties: 1) Port health offices; 2) Provincial and city/regency-level health offices; 3) Public healthcare laboratories; and 4) Hospitals, public health centers and other healthcare facilities.
  • In addition to being mandated to monitor recent trends and updates relating to COVID-19 cases through the available official channel, the above-listed mandated parties are also required to implement certain measures, including: 1) Ensuring that all on-duty healthcare workers are provided with optimal protection measures; 2) Providing primary and booster COVID-19 vaccination services; 3) Improving infection awareness standards; 4) Disseminating information among and providing education to the general public relating to COVID-19 updates and preventive measures; and 5) Ensuring that COVID-19 detection and response measures are in line with those that are specifically addressed under Regulation of the Minister of Health No. 23 of 2023 on Guidelines for the Mitigation of COVID-19.
  • It should also be noted that the above-described official COVID-19 updates channel can be accessed through the following links: 1) https://infeksiemerging.kemkes.go.id (for domestic updates); and 2) https://covid19.who.int/ (for global updates).
