Framework on the National Strategy for Business and Human Rights Officially Introduced: Indonesias Human Rights-Friendly Business Landscape Set to Be Improved

  • The Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna L. Laoly (“Minister”), has affirmed that the introduction of Regulation of the President  No. 60 of 2023 (“Regulation 60/2023”) on the National Strategy for Business and Human Rights (“National Strategy”) is aiming to ensure a comprehensive human rights framework for further implementation by businesses that will apply at both the central and regional levels. The National Strategy will now serve as a reference for central and regional governments during the mainstreaming of Business and Human Rights (“BHR”) across all work programs.
  • The introduction of Regulation 60/2023 demonstrates the Indonesian Government’s commitment to the implementation of the United Nation’s United Guiding Principles on BHR (UNGPs). Meanwhile, the Minister has also stated that the Ministry of Law and Human Rights is currently preparing several regulatory frameworks that will ultimately establish national and regional task forces that will assume responsibility for overseeing and ensuring the consistent implementation of both central and regional BHR.
  • On a similar note, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD (“Coordinating Minister”), has claimed that Regulation 60/2023 has the potential to bolster the global competitiveness of the country’s human-rights-friendly business sectors through the strengthening of intergovernmental cooperation, business entities and civil society. In this regard, the Coordinating Minister also believes that Regulation 60/2023 may appeal to global investors and consumers, as the new framework is both adaptive and dynamic in nature and makes room for consistent updates that should further suit the ongoing needs of the Indonesian public.
