Indonesian Government Prioritizes Domestic Demand for Gas

  • Indonesia’s Director-General of Oil and Gas ("Director-General"), Tutuka Ariadji, has stated that in the year up to August 2023, the volume of domestically utilized, domestically-produced gas totaled 3,725 BBTUD. Based on this figure, the government has now decided to prioritize domestic demand for gas over exports, primarily due to the fact that 68% of the country’s total gas output is now being utilized in order to meet domestic demand across various sectors of the economy, with the largest utilization of 28.52% being realized by the industrial sector, while only 23.43% is currently being exported.
  • Meanwhile, the Director-General has also stated that pipeline-realized exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and natural gas to several Asian countries, including China and Singapore, have continued to surge in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, an increase in exports from US$ 209 million to US$ 4.6 billion was recorded during the 2020 - 2021 period.
  • Ultimately, the Director-General is encouraging all stakeholders to work towards increasing the nation’s gas reserves through the utilization of exploration facilities in ways that encompass communications, control over working areas and various incentives that will be offered by the government. One particular area of focus is fossil fuel potential, which may ultimately add to the currently produced volumes of domestic gas. (ANT)
