Carbon Exchanges to Commence Operations on 26 September 2023

The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners Commissioner of the Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan – "OJK"), Mahendra Siregar, has stated that all processes that relate to support for carbon trading, specifically within the regulatory sector, are now deemed ready in the wake of the issuance of Regulation of the OJK No. 14 of 2023 on the Organization of the Carbon Exchange and Circular of the OJK No. 12/SEOJK.04/2023 on Procedures for the Organization of Carbon Trading Through the Carbon Exchange. As such, carbon trading will commence on 26 September 2023.
During the opening of the National Seminar on the Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions, which was held in Jambi on 18 September 2023, Mahendra stated that carbon trading activities would be maintained and their results would be reinvested in efforts towards environmental sustainability, specifically initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gases.
Within this context, the role of the OJK is to supervise carbon trading through the carbon exchange, including the organization of carbon trading, support for market infrastructure, service users, transactions and settlements, consumer protection, risk management and so forth.
