KKP to Further Implement Blue Economy Framework

Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan – "KKP") has decided to provide official support for the implementation of the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework, which was adopted during the recent 43^rd ASEAN High Level Conference (Konferensi Tingkat Tinggi – "KTT"). The KTT was held in Jakarta from 5 - 7 September 2023.
Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, Indonesia’s Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, explained in a recent official statement that the KKP had decided to implement a national-level blue economy program in line with principles embodied by the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework. This program will encompass various initiatives, such as fishing policies, which will be formulated on a quota basis, and the Advanced Fishermen’s Village program, as well as a national movement known as the Sea Love Month (Bulan Cinta Laut – "BCL"), which will focus its efforts on the cleaning up of marine waste and which has been actively implemented since 2021.
Minister Trenggono hopes that with the official adoption of the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework, cooperation between ASEAN member countries will be further strengthened, particularly within the maritime and fisheries sectors. In addition, it is hoped that the blue economy will ultimately become a new source of sustainable economic development within ASEAN member countries.
