Board of PROPER Urges Govt. to Increase Investment in Renewable Energy Based Transportation Infrastructure

  • In response to recent national media stories that addressed the ongoing deterioration of Jakarta’s Air Quality Index (Indeks Kualitas Udara – "AQI"), Agus Pambagio, a member of the Board of the Public Disclosure Program for Environmental Compliance (Program Penilaian Peringkat Kinerja Perusahaan dalam Pengelolaan Lingkungan/PROPER) at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, has urged the government to further increase investment in the development of renewable energy based transportation infrastructure  (e.g. electric vehicles, biodiesel and other efficient and affordable biofuels), particularly in relation public transportation vehicles.
  • Mr. Pambagio, claims that the recent AQI deterioration places Jakarta at the top of the list of global cities with the worst air quality, a situation that is primarily the result of transportation-related pollution, which makes an approximate contribution of around 57% of the capital’s total pollution. Moreover, Mr. Pambagio has claimed that up to 98% of this transportation-related pollution derives from private vehicles.
  • The statistics outlined above are also affirmed through the overall number of motorized vehicles currently operating in the Greater Jakarta area, which, according to Indonesia’s Central Bureau of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik – "BPS"), were estimated to top 21.8 million at the end of 2022. Official BPS statistics also confirm that up to 1.6 million motorized vehicles were newly registered within the Greater Jakarta area during the 2020 - 2022 period. (ANT)
