Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ensures Measured Fishing Regulations Will Not Overlap with Port State Measure Agreement

  • The Director of Fisheries Ports at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Tri Ari Wibowo, has stated that the Port State Measures Agreement ("PSMA") will not overlap with the Measured Fishing (Penangkapan Ikan Terukur  - "PIT") policy since the PIT regulates fisheries governance as a whole on a catch quota basis, while the PSMA is a tool that will be used in order to prevent illegal fishing practices.
  • The PSMA is being aimed at foreign-flagged vessels that enter and/or use domestic Indonesian port facilities in the hope of preventing illegal fishing practices. Indonesia previously ratified the PSMA international agreement back in 2016.
  • The PIT policy was created in order to ensure sustainable fishing resources and to make fishing ports a new economic focus in coastal areas. In this regard, one new policy mandates that fishing vessels must now land their catches around their locations of operations and should no longer transport their catches to the island of Java. (ANT)
