Kadin Predicts Accelerated Transition to Electric Vehicles Through Incentives

  • Arsjad Rasjid, Chairperson of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), has predicted that the electric vehicle ("EV") purchase incentive program will assist and accelerate the country’s attempts to achieve its electrification and energy transition target and support Indonesia’s aim of becoming an EV giant.
  • Under Regulation of the President No. 55 of 2019 on the Program to Accelerate Battery-Based EV for Land Transportation, the government is targeting EV adoption that reaches two million units by 2025.
  • Based on research conducted by McKinsey in 2021, EV adoption had already reached 0.7% in Thailand and 0.3% in Malaysia, while it only stood at 0.1% in Indonesia.  Various obstacles remain in terms of this transition, specifically the relatively high costs involved in moving from non-EV to EV. As a result, various incentives have been introduced by the government in order to accelerate this transition.
  • Rasjid further noted that the acceleration of EV in Indonesia is in line with one of ASEAN-BAC's priority issues related to sustainable development. (ANT)
