Draft Bill on Health: Lifetime Applicability of STR Will Not Put Aside the Competence of Doctors

The Director-General on Healthcare Workers under the Ministry of Health, Arianti Anaya, has stated that the proposal of making a lifetime applicability for Letter of Registration (Surat Tanda Registrasi – "STR") for doctors is on the pipeline to be a part of the Draft Bill on Health. Under the currently applicable legal frameworks, STR must be renewed for every five years hence the adjustment on the Draft Bill will simplify the administrative process for doctors and healthcare workers.
However, the specific proposal on the applicability period of STR has become a hot topic among the professional organizations hence Arianti has reaffirmed that the adjustment on the applicability period of STR will not set aside the requirements on competence for doctors which are critical to maintain the services quality and the competence of healthcare workers in carrying out their duty.
Aside from the topic on STR applicability period, Arianti has also highlighted other notable topics under the Draft Bill on Health. Firstly, regarding the Practice License (Surat Izin Praktek/SIP) which are currently still subject to unstandardized procedures, leading to the varied range of issuance period, from three to seven months. Secondly, regarding Professional Credits Units (Satuan Kredit Profesi/SKP) which must be fulfilled by healthcare workers yet seen to be imbalance in terms of the cost. _(ANT)
