ASEAN +3 Task Force Meeting Becomes the First Agenda Item of Indonesias ASEAN 2023 Chairmanship

  • In the wake of its recent G20 presidency, Indonesia has once again taken on a global leadership role in the form of the chairmanship of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations ("ASEAN") and co-chairmanship of ASEAN +3. Through its current chairmanship, Indonesia is aiming to encourage the active participation of the ASEAN member states in order to provide ideas and solutions aimed at further strengthening the ongoing economic recovery within the ASEAN region and continuing with the transformation of Southeast Asia into a sustainable global development machine.
  • Recently, the ASEAN +3 Task Force ("TF") held a meeting that marked the opening financial-sector session of Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN and co-chairmanship of ASEAN +3.
  • The first day of TF meetings comprised several sessions which discussed the following areas, among other topics: 1) Discussions of the development of a comprehensive financial stability security network architecture with the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office ("AMRO"); 2) The strengthening of the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralization (CMIM) mechanism; 3) The ASEAN+3 Future Initiative; and 4) Thematic agenda items (e.g. Indonesia’s proposal for ASEAN +3 to discuss the development of a database of household debt and sustainable finance issues).
  • The second day of TF meetings saw the following topics being raised: 1) A Special AMRO hearing that discussed the organization and governance of AMRO; and 2) A proposal raised by Indonesia and AMRO to strengthen AMRO governance in order to support AMRO capacity building and roles. In this regard, the ASEAN +3 member states must remain cautious in terms of the risk of a global economic downturn, which has been predicted by various international agencies and forums, by implementing measures aimed at strengthening the regional economy and by emphasizing international economic and financial cooperation.
