Government, Associations, Academics and Business Actors Urged to Synergize Acceleration of CCS/CCUS Implementation in Indonesia

  • Mirza Mahendra, Oil-and-Gas Technical and Environmental Director at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources ("Ministry"), stated during a recent event organized by the Association of Indonesian Petroleum Engineers (Ikatan Ahli Teknik Perminyakan Indonesia – "IATMI") that the synergy and support of all parties will be vital in terms of efforts to accelerate the implementation of low carbon technologies across Indonesia’s oil-and-gas sector.
  • Low-carbon technologies such as carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) offer a solution in terms of increasing oil-and-gas production to meet a target of one million barrels of oil per day and 12 billion cubic feet of gas per day by 2030, as well as supporting emissions reduction efforts as part of the ongoing push towards net zero emissions within the country.
  • Mr. Mahendra also explained that 16 carbon capture and storage (CCS)/CCUS projects are ongoing across Indonesia and are currently in the study and preparation stages. Most of these projects are being targeted for operation by 2030, including the CCUS at Tangguh BP Berau, which has already had its development plan approved and for which a pilot huff-and-puff, CO2 injection test has been carried out by Pertamina in the Jatibarang Field.
  • According to Mr. Mahendra, the Ministry is preparing a draft regulation that will address the implementation of CCS/CCUS and which is currently at the inter-ministerial harmonization stage.
  • Meanwhile, Raam Krisna, Chairperson of the IATMI, has emphasized the importance of creating synergy between the government, associations, academics and business actors in order to support the acceleration of CCS/CCUS within Indonesia. Carbon trading in particular is believed to have strong potential in terms of economic support for the CCS/CCUS project. (ANT)
