Overview
Recently, a new and popular Chinese chain of fresh ice cream and tea stores, Mixue, fell under the spotlight in Indonesia after one of its outlets was found to be displaying the Halal Indonesia logo when in fact Mixue has yet to secure halal certification from the Halal Product Guarantee Agency (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal – “BPJPH”).[1] In response to this violation, the Head of the BPJPH, Muhammad Aqil Irham, has confirmed that the Halal Indonesia logo/label can only be affixed to products that have secured official halal certification.[2] According to data on the Halal Information System (Sistem Informasi Halal – “SIHALAL”), Mixue submitted an application for halal certification on 13 November 2022 and is currently undergoing an audit that is being implemented by the Institute for Food, Drugs and Cosmetic Assessments operating under the Indonesian Clergy Council (Lembaga Pengkajian Pangan Obat-obatan dan Kosmetika Majelis Ulama Indonesia – “LPPOM MUI”), which is an official Halal Inspection Institution (Lembaga Pemeriksa Halal – “LPH”).[3]
