- As a part of the government’s commitment to realizing its sovereignty over Indonesia’s natural resources, as well as to increase the added value of said resources, the government will implement an export ban on bauxite ore commencing June 2023. The export ban on bauxite ore is being introduced in an effort to boost the domestic bauxite processing and refining industry.
- Previously, the government imposed an export ban on nickel ore, which managed to significantly increase the value of Indonesia’s nickel exports from Rp. 17 trillion in 2014 to Rp. 326 trillion in 2021. Addressing this increase in value, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, has predicted that the domestic industrialization of bauxite will ultimately be able to increase state revenue within this sector from Rp. 21 trillion to Rp. 62 trillion.
- The Coordinating Minister of Economy, Airlangga Hartato has also stated that there are currently only four existing domestic facilities for the refining of bauxite with a combined production capacity of 4.33 million tons annually. However, a further eight refinery facilities are currently under construction and have a combined input capacity of 27.41 million tons per year and a production capacity of 4.98 million tons per year.
