Overview
In recent months, the Indonesian Government has been tackling a growing number of atypical progressive acute kidney injury (“AKI”) cases among children across the country. Indeed, during the past month, Indonesia’s Ministry of Health (“Ministry”) recorded significant growth in the number of AKI cases nationally, from a total of 269 AKI cases and 157 fatalities on 26 October 2022[1] to a total of 324 AKI cases and 195 fatalities on 6 November 2022.[2] These AKI cases are suspected of having been caused by medicinal syrups containing propylene glycol substances that in turn contain ethylene glycol (“EG”) and diethylene glycol (“DEG”) contaminants in amounts that exceed the designated safe thresholds.[3]
