BPOM Preparing Draft Regulation on Nutrient Labeling Guidelines

  • In order to ensure that Indonesia’s nutrient labeling standards are in line with recent legal, scientific and technological developments, the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan – “BPOM”) is currently preparing a Draft Regulation on Nutrient Labeling Guidelines.
  • When this new regulation is finally introduced, any processed foods that have Nutrient Value Information (Informasi Nilai Gizi – “ING”) affixed to them must fulfill requirements set out under the new Nutrient Label Guidelines, which can currently be found under the Appendix to the Draft Regulation. The new Nutrient Label Guidelines have been calculated based on an estimated average energy requirement for Indonesian citizens of 1250 kilo calories per person per day. It is important to note that the nutrient content of any processed foods should not exceed a level of 100% per day, with the exception of certain processed foods that are addressed under various relevant laws and regulations.
  • The Nutrient Label Guidelines will be used to calculate the percentages of Nutrient Fulfillment Values (Angka Kecukupan Gizi/AKG) that should be affixed to the relevant nutrient labels, as well as to complete calculations that relate to claims on labeling and the fulfillment of requirements that apply to processed foods, as set out under the relevant laws and regulations.
  • The BPOM is currently soliciting input concerning this Draft Regulation until a deadline of 21 October 2022. Said inputs may be submitted via the following email address: [email protected] cc:[email protected] by downloading the format available at https://bit.ly/masukanALG.
