Ministry of Agriculture Elaborates upon Preparations for 2025 Indonesian Sustainable Palm-Oil Certification Target

  • Through the issuance of Regulation of the President No. 44 of 2020 on Indonesian Sustainable Palm-Oil ("ISPO") Certification Systems and Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture No. 38 of 2020 on the Organization of ISPO, Indonesia previously set mandatory ISPO certification targets for growers (pekebun), which should be achieved by 2025. Given the importance of current global environmental conditions as regards the need for environmentally friendly, sustainable industries, particularly within the palm-oil sector, Baginda Siagian, in his position as Acting Director for Plantation Protection at the Ministry of Agriculture, recently stated that the ISPO scheme is aiming to ensure the optimal and improved management and development of palm-oil plantations.
  • According to Siagian, ISPO certification is also being implemented in an effort to increase the acceptance (keberterimaan) and competitiveness of Indonesian palm-oil plantation products within the national and international marketplace, as well as to boost efforts aimed at accelerating reductions in the country’s greenhouse-gas emissions. Indonesia's palm-oil exports continue to increase, exceeding 50 million tons in 2021 and making Indonesia the largest exporter of palm oil in the world.
  • The ISPO requirements for plantation companies break down as follows: 1) Must have secured a plantation business license; 2) Must have proof of ownership of land rights; 3) Must secure an environmental permit; 4) Must have internal auditors who understand the ISPO principles and criteria; and 5) Must have been designated a plantation class determination by a plantation business permit issuer.
  • Meanwhile, the ISPO requirements for growers break down as follows:  1) Must have secured a plantation business registration certificate; 2) Must have proof of ownership of land rights; 3) Must have an internal control system team; and 4) Must possess an environmental management statement.
