Overview
Having previously been declared free from the extremely serious effects of foot-and-mouth disease (Penyakit Mulut dan Kuku – “PMK”) in 1986 and recognized by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) in 1990, joining other PMK-free countries such as the United States, Australia, New Zealand and many European countries,[1] PMK disease has unfortunately reoccurred in Indonesia in recent months. The first PMK cases of this current outbreak were discovered in the city of Gresik on 27 April 2022, where 402 beef cattle were found to have been infected by the virus.[2]
