WHO QR Code Set to Harmonize Global Health Protocols for COVID-19 Vaccination Verifications

  • With G20 countries set to re-open international travel, there is a need for a universal verification mechanism for digital COVID-19 certification. In order to address this need, during the recent first G20 Health Ministers Meeting, Indonesia introduced the Federated Public Trust Directory ("FPTD") mechanism which utilizes a single international-standard Quick-Response Code ("QR Code") technology in order to complete universal COVID-19 vaccine validations.
  • The FPTD mechanism is still in the development and testing phase, with the final product projected to be introduced on a global scale during the August to October 2022 period. If implemented, the FPTD will harmonize and incorporate various network systems and COVID-19 vaccine verification mechanisms by utilizing the aforementioned QR Code in order to verify vaccine certification and health documents, as facilitated by the World Health Organization ("WHO").
  • Indonesia has openly encouraged and committed to providing technical assistance to G20 member states that are in process of implementing this QR Code system. Furthermore, Indonesia is also engaging in diplomacy at the G20 level to establish the FPTD and assist countries in the conducting of data verifications without data exchanges. (ANT)
