- In an effort to realize technology-based public services and government management, the Regional Representatives Council (Dewan Perwakilan Daerah – "DPD") has initiated a Draft Bill on Digital Governance. Said Draft Bill is set to become an umbrella law capable of regulating digital-based governance in Indonesia.
- The Draft Bill will regulate three main areas, specifically digital governance, digital economy and digital society. The objective of the Draft Bill is to achieve sustainable development and to offer enhanced public services through the provision of digital-based public services and the development of competence capable of accommodating the dynamics of Industrial Revolution 4.0. The Draft Bill is also expected to accelerate the introduction of technological developments that can be exploited by young innovators, start-ups and technological companies.
- However, Ibrahim Kholiul Rohman, a senior researcher, has claimed that Indonesia is still weak in terms of its digital sector, which remains compromised by uneven internet access across various regions of the country. Moreover, purchasing power and digital literacy remain limited when it comes to the internet and the digital sector. Meanwhile, in order to engage in various digital technology-based activities, adequate internet connectivity will be essential.
