In order to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease through animals and animal products within Indonesia, the Head of the Agricultural Quarantine Agency (Badan Karantina Pertanian – “BKP”) has issued Circular No. 12950/KR.120/K/05/2022 on Increasing Awareness of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (“Circular 12950/2022”), which clarifies the following matters:[1]
- Quarantine measures for various animals and animal products which are delivered from Gresik, Lamongan, Sidoarjo and Mojokerto either to East Java or which are transiting through East Java, as well as animals and animal products which are delivered from other areas that are indicated as potentially having foot-and-mouth of mouth disease;
- Biosecurity measures for the prevention of foot-and-mouth disease; and
- Risk-management actions; monitoring and early detection of foot-and-mouth disease; communication, information, and education; as well as coordination with relevant institutions.
Recent data has revealed that the spread of foot-and-mouth disease has now expanded to 16 provinces and 82 regencies/cities across Indonesia. Against this background, the Minister of Agriculture has now issued Circular No. 02/PK.300/M/5/2022 on Traffic Management for Vulnerable Animals, Animal Products and Other Disease Carrying Media in Areas of Outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth Disease, while the BKP has also held discussions with business actors and other stakeholders in relation to this matter.[2]......
