DPR Passes Bill on New Indonesian State Capital City of Nusantara

Despite ultimately being rejected by one of its factions, Indonesia’s House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat – “DPR”) recently approved the Bill on the State Capital City (“Bill”), which sets out the legal framework for the relocation of the state capital city of Indonesia (Ibu Kota Negara – “IKN”)  from DKI Jakarta to East Kalimantan. Moreover, Indonesia’s Minister of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency has issued a statement affirming that “Nusantara” (the Indonesian word for “archipelago”) has been chosen as the name for the new IKN in order to reflect the unity of the Indonesian archipelago and its ability to accommodate the plural nature of Indonesian society.[1] Once the Bill has been promulgated, Law  No. 29 of 2007 on the Governance of DKI Jakarta as the Indonesian State Capital (“Law 29/2007”) will be replaced and repealed.[2]
