- Kimia Farma, Indonesia’s primary state-owned enterprise within the pharmaceutical sector, has decided to delay the implementation of its individual paid vaccination program following widespread protests by the general public. Kimia Farma secretary, Ganti Winarto Putro, has stated that the company’s management has decided to extend the period for the promotion of the new program and the registration of prospective participants until further notice.
- Indonesia’s Minister of Health ("Minister"), Budi Gunadi Sadikin, had previously issued Regulation of the Minister No. 19 of 2021 on the Second Amendment to Regulation of the Minister No. 10 of 2021 on the Implementation of Vaccinations in Order to Mitigate the Corona Virus Disease 2019 ("COVID-19") Pandemic ("Regulation 19/2021"). At the time, the Minister stated that the paid individual vaccination option was being offered in order to expand public access to COVID-19 vaccines.
- The government insisted that it will continue to implement its free vaccination program despite the fact that individual paid vaccine services are set to be offered by both Kimia Farma and Bio Farma. Individual paid vaccinations offer the public an alternative and the hope is that the overall implementation of the national vaccination program will ultimately be accelerated and that individual paid vaccinations will help Indonesia to achieve the stated goal of herd immunity as quickly as possible.
- In terms of the prices that will be set, the government has previously stipulated that a charge of Rp. 879,140 will be levied for the administration of individual vaccines. This figure breaks down as follows: Rp. 321,660 per dose for the purchase of vaccines and a service fee of Rp. 117,910 per injection. For two doses of vaccine, Rp. 643,000 will be charged for the purchase of vaccines, while a service fee of Rp. 253,820 will be levied for two injections.
- The individual paid vaccination program will be available at eight clinics across six cities, specifically three clinics in Jakarta, as well as clinics in Bandung, Semarang, Solo, Surabaya and Bali. In addition to providing clinics with vaccines, PT Kimia Farma Diagnostika, as a subsidiary of Kimia Farma, is also set to expand the reach of individual paid vaccines from airports to shopping centers in major cities once the government revokes the ongoing emergency Community Activity Restrictions (Pemberlakuan Pembatasan Kegiatan Masyarakat/PPKM).
