- Mulyanto, acting in his role as a member of Commission VII at Indonesia’s House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat /DPR), has requested that the government tighten the Domestic Market Obligation ("DMO") as a follow-up measure in response to the currently soaring price of coal. Indeed, as a result of the price spike, several steam-electric power stations (Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Uap/PLTU) are set to discontinue operations due to a lack of coal.
- Mr. Mulyanto stated that coal prices have currently hit a peak of USD 128.40/ton, the highest price that this natural resource has reached in the last decade. Indeed, by way of comparison, the coal price for US power plants is only USD 70/ton. As a result of this price discrepancy, many domestic coal companies currently export their products.
- Through Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 255.K/30/MEM/2020 on the Fulfilment of Domestic Coal Requirements for 2021, coal companies are compelled to sell 25% of their coal in order to meet the DMO during 2021. (ANT)
