- Despite ultimately deciding not to repeal the controversial Law on Electronic Information and Transactions (“ITE Law”), Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, issued a statement recently affirming that the government is set to implement a number of minor revisions to the ITE Law, which include the following: 1) Addition of elucidations to several articles which have been dogged by ambiguities and multiple interpretations (including improved definitions of blasphemy and defamation); and 2) Incorporation of a new article 45C, which is set to strengthen the current provisions.
- Furthermore, Mr. Mahfud has also stated that the government is set to issue a Joint Decree (Surat Keputusan Bersama/SKB) of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the Attorney General’s Office and the National Police Force, which will serve as a set of technical guidelines and implementing criteria in relation to the ITE Law.
